Slim-Fast Recalls 10 Million Ready-to-Drink Cans

If you've been stocking up on Slim-Fast drinks in preparation for a New Year's diet, you need to know that Unilever is recalling some 10 million cans of its ready-to-drink products in the U.S. and Canada. The problem: The drinks may be contaminated with a bacteria that can make you sick.

This past Thursday, a spokesman at Unilever's U.S. office said the recall is "due to the possibility of contamination with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism, which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting."

I don't know about you, but it's certainly not the way I want to lose weight!

The massive recall affects only cans of the the Slim-Fast ready-to-drink products. The powdered version and the snack bars are believed to be just fine.

Most of the ready-to-drink cans in question are packaged in cartons that contain four, six or 12 cans. Single-sale cans are also sold in certain retail outlets.

The Unilever spokeswoman said buyers of the product should discard them and contact the company for a full refund.

The Slim-Fast site says, "The recall involves all Slim-Fast RTD products in cans, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code or UPC number."

According to the Los Angeles Times, "don't be too alarmed if you've already consumed such products, especially if it was more than a day ago. Food poisoning with Bacillus cereus hits fast, but is short-lived and relatively mild."
